Bone Grafting in Flint, MI

Rebuild lost jawbone tissue to restore a strong foundation for implants and long-term oral health.

What is Bone Grafting?

After a tooth is lost or removed, the jawbone in that area starts to shrink. It can lose up to 25% of its width in the first year alone. That bone loss makes it harder to place dental implants later, and it can change the shape of your face over time. Bone grafting adds new bone material to the weakened area so your jaw can rebuild itself and support future treatment.

We place graft material directly into the site where bone has thinned. Over the next several months, your body replaces that material with real, living bone. The grafting material acts like a scaffold, giving your own cells a structure to grow into. For patients in Flint, MI who need implants but have been told they don't have enough bone, a graft is often the step that makes the rest of the plan possible.

Benefits of Bone Grafting

Bone grafting rebuilds the foundation your jaw needs so the next step in your treatment can succeed the first time around.

  • Your Jaw Keeps Its Shape

After a tooth is lost, the bone in that area starts to shrink. A graft fills that space with material your body replaces with real bone, keeping your jaw from narrowing over time.

  • Implants Get a Solid Base

A dental implant needs adequate bone depth to hold firm. Bone grafting rebuilds that volume so the implant post has a solid foundation to fuse into and stay stable for decades ahead.

  • Healing That Feels Calm

Most patients say the recovery is milder than expected. Over-the-counter pain relief handles the soreness, and the graft site closes up steadily over the following weeks.

When Bone Grafting Makes Sense

If you have been told your jawbone is too thin or too shallow for an implant, bone grafting is likely the next step. Teeth that were lost or extracted years ago leave behind empty sockets, and the bone around those sites shrinks over time. Gum disease can do the same thing quietly, wearing away bone until a scan reveals what was lost.

We also place bone grafts right after a tooth extraction to preserve the ridge before it resorbs. Adults of any age can be candidates. Some patients in Flint, MI come to us already knowing they need a graft; others learn about it during a routine exam. Either way, the procedure is predictable and well-studied, and most people heal without any complications.

Advanced Bone Grafting Technology

We use cone beam 3D imaging to map your jaw before any grafting procedure. A standard x-ray shows a flat picture. Cone beam CT gives us a full three-dimensional view of bone density, nerve pathways, and sinus position, all in a single scan that takes about 15 seconds. That level of detail lets us measure exactly how much bone you need and place the graft with pinpoint accuracy.

Today's graft materials have come a long way. We work with biocompatible options that integrate predictably with your natural bone, including mineralized human donor tissue and synthetic ceramics that mimic your jaw's mineral structure. Platelet-rich fibrin drawn from a small sample of your own blood can speed healing at the graft site. These tools mean shorter recovery times and stronger results compared to grafting techniques from even a decade ago.

What to Expect During Your Visit

We start by numbing the area completely, so you feel pressure at most but no pain. Once you're comfortable, we make a small opening in the gum tissue and place the grafting material directly against the bone. In some cases, we use material from a tissue bank; other times, a synthetic option works better. The whole appointment usually runs 45 minutes to an hour, and most of it is prep work.

Some swelling and mild soreness are normal for the first two or three days. An ice pack and over-the-counter pain relief handle it well for most patients. We'll see you back in about two weeks to check healing. New bone typically needs three to six months to mature before the site is ready for an implant or other restoration.

Before Appointment

  • Mention any blood thinners, aspirin, or supplements you take so we can adjust your bone grafting plan if needed.

  • Eat a solid meal about two hours before your appointment since you won't be able to chew on the graft site for a while.

  • Arrange a ride home, especially if we discussed sedation, because driving after a bone graft procedure isn't safe.

After Appointment

  • Keep gauze over the graft site with gentle biting pressure for 30 to 45 minutes, replacing it once if bleeding continues.

  • Skip brushing directly on the graft area for the first week. Rinse gently with warm salt water starting the day after surgery.

  • Hold off on exercise, bending, and heavy lifting for at least four days so the bone graft material stays stable while healing begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions to help you feel informed, prepared, and confident before your appointment.

  • Once the graft fully integrates with your natural bone, it becomes part of your jaw permanently. The new bone holds up just like the bone you were born with, so it can support an implant or maintain your jaw structure for decades.

  • We need to stabilize active gum disease first. Once your gums are healthier, bone grafting can move forward safely. We often coordinate grafting with periodontal treatment so both issues are addressed in the right order.

  • Not at all after healing. During the first couple of weeks you'll stick to softer foods, but once the site has recovered, you can eat everything you normally would. There are no permanent dietary restrictions.

  • There is no upper age limit. We evaluate overall health rather than age alone. Patients in their 70s and 80s heal well from bone grafts regularly, especially when conditions like blood sugar and blood pressure are well managed.

  • An implant placed in thin or weak bone has a much higher chance of failing because there isn't enough structure to hold it. Skipping the graft can also lead to continued bone loss in the area, which limits your options later.
