What is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift adds bone to your upper jaw so it can support an implant. After losing upper back teeth, the sinus membrane often drops and the bone beneath it thins out. That leaves too little structure for an implant post to anchor into. During a sinus lift, we gently raise the sinus membrane and pack bone graft material into the space underneath. Over several months, that material fuses with your natural bone.

The result is a thicker, denser ridge exactly where we need it. At C. Patrick Gray, DDS. in Flint, MI, we use this procedure regularly for patients who were told they don't have enough bone for implants. Modern grafting materials integrate faster than older options, and refined surgical techniques mean less swelling and a shorter recovery for most people.

Benefits of Sinus Lift

A sinus lift builds the foundation your upper jaw needs so implants have solid, lasting bone to hold on to.

  • Enough Bone for the Post

Bone beneath the upper back teeth thins quickly after tooth loss. A sinus lift rebuilds that volume so an implant post has the foundation it needs to fuse and hold firm long-term.

  • One Less Step to Implants

A sinus lift often sets up implant placement on a predictable timeline. Fewer separate procedures, fewer healing windows between steps, and a shorter road to your finished smile.

  • Jaw Shape Stays Intact

After tooth loss, the upper jaw loses density and the face gradually shifts. Rebuilding that bone slows the process and preserves the contour you have had your whole life until now.

When a Sinus Lift Becomes Necessary

If you have been told your upper jawbone is too thin for implants, a sinus lift is likely the reason you are here. The maxillary sinuses sit right above your upper back teeth, and when those teeth have been missing for a while, the bone beneath the sinus floor gradually shrinks. That lost height leaves too little foundation for an implant to anchor into safely.

This is especially common in adults who had upper molars removed years ago, or in people whose sinuses naturally sit low. We also see patients in Flint, MI who need a sinus lift because bone grafting alone would not build enough vertical support. Age is rarely a limiting factor. Most healthy adults qualify, and the procedure has a long, well-documented track record of creating the solid bone base your jaw needs.

Advanced Sinus Lift Technology

Cone beam 3D imaging lets us map your sinus anatomy before we make a single incision. The scan shows bone thickness, membrane position, and the exact location of nearby structures, all measured to a fraction of a millimeter. That level of detail means we plan the graft size and placement digitally, so the actual procedure is quicker and more predictable. Traditional flat x-rays could only hint at what was there. A 3D scan removes the guesswork.

We also use piezoelectric instruments for the most delicate step: lifting the sinus membrane. These tools vibrate at ultrasonic frequencies that cut bone precisely without disturbing soft tissue. Compared to traditional rotary drills, piezo tips reduce the risk of membrane perforation significantly. Paired with advanced bone grafting particles that encourage faster cell growth, the combination shortens healing time and builds denser bone.

What to Expect During Your Visit

We start by numbing the area thoroughly, so you stay comfortable from the first moment. Once you're settled, we make a small opening in the gum tissue along the upper jaw and gently lift the sinus membrane upward. Bone graft material fills the space beneath it, and we close the site with a few sutures. The whole process typically runs 60 to 90 minutes.

Mild swelling and light pressure around the cheek are normal for the first few days. Most patients manage just fine with over-the-counter pain relief. Avoid blowing your nose forcefully or sneezing with your mouth closed for about two weeks. The grafted bone needs roughly four to six months to mature before we can place your implant.

Before Appointment

  • Mention any sinus infections or chronic congestion you've had recently so we can plan the graft approach accordingly.

  • Hold off on aspirin, ibuprofen, and blood-thinning supplements like fish oil for at least five days before the procedure.

  • Arrange a ride home, since the sedation and upper-jaw surgery will leave you too groggy to drive safely.

After Appointment

  • Avoid blowing your nose for at least 10 days after your sinus lift. Gentle sniffing is fine, but pressure can disturb the graft.

  • Sleep with your head propped on two pillows for the first week to reduce swelling around the sinus area.

  • Skip using a straw for at least a week. The suction can pull on the healing membrane and compromise the graft site.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions to help you feel informed, prepared, and confident before your appointment.

  • Once the grafted bone integrates with your natural bone, the results are permanent. The new bone becomes part of your upper jaw and supports an implant just like the bone you were born with.

  • It depends on how much bone you have to start with. If there is enough existing bone to stabilize the implant, we can sometimes place both in one visit. If not, the graft needs about four to six months to mature first.

  • Chronic sinus infections, uncontrolled diabetes, and heavy smoking can slow healing or raise the chance of complications. We review your full medical history beforehand and may coordinate with your physician if needed.

  • Most patients return to light activity within a few days. We typically recommend waiting about a week before flying or doing anything strenuous, since pressure changes and heavy exertion can stress the healing graft site.

  • You still have options like a bridge or a partial denture that do not require bone support. But without an implant, the jawbone in that area will continue to shrink over time, which can affect neighboring teeth.
